State Rep. Josie Tomkow (R-Polk City) is a sponsor of House Bill 787, which would allow an individual to have the option to designate on their driver's license whether they have a developmental disability.
The bill states: "The capital letter 'D' shall be exhibited on the driver license of a person who has a developmental disability, if the person, or his or her parent or legal guardian, presents sufficient proof that the person has been diagnosed with a developmental disability by a physician licensed under chapter 458 as determined by the department."
The request for this designation was brought to Tomkow by the Readdy family of Valrico.
Tomkow's Facebook states: "Mrs. Readdy approached our office about legislation that would allow for an individual to have the option to designate a developmental disability on their driver's license. Her son Dalton, inspired this legislation and we were very fortunate to have the family come and speak on behalf of the bill."
If passed, the bill would be effective on October 1.
