City Of Lake Wales issued the following announcement on Jun. 28.

The City of Lake Wales Municipal Airport was established in 1928. The airport has a rich history. During World War II, the Army Corps of Engineers utilized the airport for the training of military pilots.

Over the past 70 years, the airport has expanded in size by more than 485 acres, and it now features a variety of services.

The airport is comprised of two runways, hangar rentals, fuel facility and a flight school. It services local and transient general aviation, business jet traffic, recreational paramotoring and skydiving.

The airport is experiencing substantial growth. It’s extending its services to offer aircraft maintenance. A new hanger is being constructed that will enable aircraft mechanics to service a variety of aircraft. Also, under construction are four new private corporate hangars that will house small and mid-size jets.

The airport is led by Airport Manager Amanda Kirby, who has more than seven years in aerospace management. Kirby oversees airport operations and maintenance. “On a monthly basis, the airport has more than 1,200 aircraft takeoffs and landings,” Kirby said.

Recent infrastructure improvements to the airport include the expansion of the main runway and taxiway. A second new taxiway was built parallel to the secondary runway.

The airport recently received a grant worth nearly $800,000 from the Florida Department of Transportation. The grant money is being used to replace the antiquated fuel facility with two new 12,000-gallon fuel tanks.
