City Of Lakeland issued the following announcement on Sep. 10.
In the early years of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II donated a pair of mute swans to the City of Lakeland from her royal flock. In 1957 the two swans arrived in Lakeland and the City’s flock has grown because of the Queen’s generous donation so many decades ago. The Lakeland swans are iconic with our community as they glide along Lake Morton. It has become a rite of passage for young and old to visit Lake Morton and feed our swans.
The majestic birds have become symbols of our community and the City’s official logo prominently features an artistic rendering of a swan as our image. The City of Lakeland will forever be linked to Queen Elizabeth II because of our connection to the royal flock.
For her contributions, we say thank you, Queen.
