Mocs Unable to Upset #6 Spartans
The Florida Southern volleyball team hit the road Tuesday night for a match-up against No. 6 Tampa in Sunshine State Conference action. The Spartans took a close opening set before pulling away from the Mocs late in the second and third sets to capture the match (25-23, 25-20, 25-17).
The loss drops the Mocs' record to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in SSC play while the Spartans improved to 20-2 on the year and 10-2 in league action.
Senior Ali Travis and junior Mackenzie Petermann led the offensive attack for the Mocs as they each tallied nine kills in the match. Travis added a pair of service aces and three digs while Petermann had a service ace and six digs,
Senior Mika Garza handed out 26 assists from her setter position while just missing out on a double-double with nine digs. Graduate student libero Beatrice Formilan dug up a team-high 24 balls.
The Spartans put together a .314 hitting percentage for the match while holding the Mocs to .174. The Spartans also out-blocked (6-3) the Mocs and had a 6-4 advantage in service aces.
The opening set was back-and-forth the entire way. FSC had several small leads throughout the period and led 21-20 late in the set. The Spartans responded to the late lead with a 4-0 run to force the first set point of the night. A kill by Travis cut the lead to two at 24-22. A Spartan attack error then cut the lead to just one at 24-23 but the Spartans were able to close out the set on the next point as a solo block ended the set 25-23.
FSC led 5-2 early in the second set but a quick run by the Spartans tied the set once again. The two teams would trade small runs midway through the period but a 7-1 run by UT late gave the Spartans a 22-17 lead. Both teams traded the final six points for an eventual 25-20 UT victory.
The third set opened much like the first two with back-and-forth action until an 11-0 run by the Spartans blew the set open at 15-5. A 7-1 run by the Mocs late the set was not enough as the Spartans went on to win 25-17.
The Mocs will be back in action this Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to compete against the Lynn Fighting Knights.
