LAKELAND, FL—Yesterday, Rep. Scott Franklin (FL-18) revealed the results of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition at a ceremony held at Polk Museum of Art.
“I’m pleased our office received a record-number of entries from across FL-18 this year,” Rep. Franklin expressed. “The competition doesn’t just showcase local talent, it provides an outlet for budding artists to pursue a passion and hone a skill, critical steps in maturing into successful adults. I applaud each student-artist who participated and the art teachers and families who support their creativity.”
The theme for the 2024 Congressional Art Competition was “Freedom is Not Free,” focusing on honoring the sacrifices of veterans and servicemembers. Students were tasked with capturing and portraying the service and sacrifice made by our nation’s heroes and their families.
The winning pieces will receive special recognition, with the Best of Show going to “Memory” by Marina Barrientos-Allende, a Junior at Harrison School for the Arts. The second-place artwork, “Freedom,” was created by Layla Sierra, a Freshman at Harrison School for the Arts. The third-place piece, “Breaking Through to Freedom,” was crafted by Mariyah Grant, a Junior at Harrison School for the Arts.
Additionally, several Honorable Mentions were awarded to outstanding submissions, including works such as “No Man Left Behind” by Erika Maya Lugo, “Memories of Freedom” by Andrea Mayna, “Americana” by Sydney Devoe, “Guiding Light” by Madison Finder, and “Heritage of Service” by Evelyn Hoffert.
The Congressional Art Competition, initiated in 1982, serves as a platform for Members of Congress to recognize the talents of high school-age artists nationwide. The winning artwork from each participating Congressional district is exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for one year, with the runners-up finding a place of honor in Rep. Franklin’s D.C. office and the local District office.
