Rep. Scott Franklin (FL-18) has issued a statement following the House passage of H.R. 8281, known as the SAVE Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. The measure passed with a vote of 221 to 198.
“Today’s vote was a critical step towards restoring Americans’ confidence in our elections. Sadly, 198 Democrats voted against measures to ensure only U.S. citizens cast ballots in federal elections,” Franklin stated.
Franklin attributed part of the need for this legislation to what he termed the "Biden Border Crisis," alleging that over nine million immigrants have crossed the border illegally, including nearly five million released into the country and two million who evaded Customs and Border Protection (CBP). He claimed these individuals strain local resources and benefit from taxpayer-funded services. Additionally, Franklin criticized sanctuary cities like New York and Washington, DC, for allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses and vote.
“Almost 80% of Americans oppose policies that encourage noncitizen voting, yet President Biden and his progressive counterparts in Congress obstruct efforts like the SAVE Act to keep our elections safe, secure and fair,” Franklin continued. “It can only be surmised from their misdirection and scare tactics they count on benefiting from noncitizen votes in the future.”
Franklin emphasized that the SAVE Act is essential for ensuring that American votes determine election outcomes. He highlighted Florida's implementation of similar laws as contributing to what he described as a model election system's security and integrity.
“I was pleased this bill passed with bipartisan support, and I remain committed to fighting for election integrity in Congress,” he concluded.
