Congressman Scott Franklin of Florida’s 18th district released a statement following the Senate's failure to pass H.R. 5371, known as the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026. This development has led to a government shutdown starting October 1, 2025.
Franklin said, “House Republicans acted responsibly by passing a clean continuing resolution on September 19 to keep the government open while long-term funding negotiations are finalized. Senate Democrats blocked it, proving they prefer to put politics ahead of protecting the American people. This shutdown was entirely avoidable, and the consequences will be felt by millions across the country. If this shutdown drags on, military families will face uncertainty with service members working without pay, straining household budgets. Seniors and veterans may see delays in the services and benefits they rely on.”
He continued: “Our bill maintained current funding levels and ensured stability while we complete the appropriations process through regular order. Instead of allowing that work continue, Democrats gambled with people’s livelihoods to push a $1.5 trillion wasteful wish list. The American people deserve better than this partisan brinkmanship.”
Scott Franklin has represented Florida’s 18th district in Congress since replacing Ross Spano in 2021. Before his congressional role, he served in the Florida House of Representatives and is a graduate of both the United States Naval Academy and Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University.
Franklin was born in Thomaston, Georgia in 1964 and currently lives in Lakeland.
