Bartow Regional Medical Center issued the following announcement on Nov. 04.
Did you know there are 573 federally recognized American Indian Nations, plus other tribes located throughout the United States who are recognized by their respective state governments?
In acknowledging the contributions of Native Americans, we owe a variety of medical and public health practices and innovations to Native American people and healers:
• Native healers pioneered pain relief and topical analgesics utilizing plants and herbs as anti-inflammatories and pain relievers.• They developed a tool that preceded the first hypodermic syringe, using hollowed-out bird bones and animal bladders to inject fluids into the body.• They mixed ground plants with water to create skin protection from the sun – sunscreen.• The Iroquois and Senecas also created bottles to assist in feeding infants.
These are just a few of the many incredible achievements we can recognize to celebrate this diverse and rich culture.
