ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provides support to various areas of the Solid Waste operation as needed, including but not limited to Commercial Garbage, Commercial Recycling, Roll-Off operation, and Container Delivery. Collects solid waste from necessary areas and safely transports loads to designated disposal locations. Washes, cleans, and performs routine maintenance, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, filters, belts, etc., on assigned equipment daily. Completes and maintains daily written records and logs on mileage, fuel consumption, and necessary repairs to vehicles and equipment. Provides support in the delivery and rehabilitation of solid waste containers as well as other special solid waste projects. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive listing of essential job functions; the performance of other essential functions may be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Experience and ability to safely and efficiently operate a variety of Solid Waste equipment (front load commercial garbage truck, cable style roll-off truck, hook style roll-off truck, container truck, pick-up truck with trailer) in various road and weather conditions.
Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the ability to maneuver large vehicles through heavy traffic and narrow openings.
Must have the ability to interpret and follow road maps and learn various routes and collection processes in the solid waste collection system.
Basic computer literacy skills (ability to compose an e-mail, provide updates in simple report format, interact with asset management software, etc.)
Ability to complete and maintain written records and logs.
Ability to effectively communicate with fellow employees and residents (written and oral).
Ability to understand and follow instructions (written and oral).
Must be prepared to learn and adapt as new tools, processes, and practices become available.
Must be able to aid in the development of less experienced personnel through coaching and training (under the guidance of the Crew Leader team).
As a floating position, must be comfortable jumping from one area of the operation to another at a moment’s notice to include a schedule that may change weekly to include some Saturday work.
As part of an emergency response unit, must be able to handle a rapid change of direction associated with environmental conditions.
Must be comfortable operating equipment in adverse road and weather conditions.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Three years experience in driving large, heavy trucks and experience in Solid Waste operations preferred.
An equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Florida Class B drivers’ license with air-brake endorsement and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
Absence of non-prescribed control substances in the applicant’s system as verified through a screening process administered by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Must have the physical ability, strength, and flexibility to perform the essential job functions in the work environment.
It requires physical work that involves walking, standing, driving (with long periods of sitting), climbing, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a routine basis is required.
Excellent spatial awareness is critical.
Considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of the fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances.
Must be able to perform manual labor in adverse conditions including confined spaces.
