City Of Lakeland issued the following announcement on Aug. 25.
Happy #WorldWaterWeek (August 23-27, 2021) & #WaterWednesday!
Approximately 70% of the Earth's surface is covered in water. However, most of that water is actually in the Earth's oceans and ice caps, making it unavailable for our use. In fact, only about 1% of the Earth's water is available for our use. The other 30% is tied up in surface waters like lakes and rivers, the atmosphere, or the ground.
Here in Lakeland, our potable water supply comes from the Upper Floridan Aquifer.
We pump out approximately 21 million gallons per day. (That's like filling up 5.25 billion bathtubs each day!) Luckily, some of that water goes directly into the ground when it rains, eventually making its way back to the aquifer. It's a very time-consuming process, so we have to be careful not to over pump the aquifer before it has time to recharge, especially during dry periods.
Conservation is the key to not depleting this precious resource we all depend on every day to survive. Check out LakelandGov.net/Conservation for more water conservation tips and information from City of Lakeland Water Utilities.
