City Of Lake Wales issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.

Lake Wales is home to a wide diversity of plants. Some common plants in our area include Chinese Hibiscus, Crepe Myrtle and American Beautyberry.

Chinese Hibiscus is a small flowering tree whose flowers have five or more petals and come in a range of colors. The rarest color of hibiscus is the Blue Breed.

Crepe Myrtle is a small to medium-sized shrub or tree. They bloom for 100 days, and the pink flowers have wrinkled petals like crepe paper.

American Beautyberry is a native shrub to the Southern United States, which produces large groups of purple berries. The compounds within the leaves, make the shrub a natural mosquito repellent.

Keep an eye out for these common plants when you’re walking on our streets, in our parks, our public gardens or even in your own backyard. Let us know if you have a favorite.
