Congressman Scott Franklin of Florida's 18th District has expressed his support for H.R. 1968, a stopgap funding bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown. The bill was narrowly approved by the House of Representatives with a vote of 217-213.
Franklin stated, "Today, I supported the FY25 continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government open. This clean CR is free of partisan 'poison pills,' safeguarding taxpayer dollars from wasteful spending and protecting critical services for Americans."
The legislation is designed to save taxpayers $13 billion while increasing defense spending by $6 billion. It also includes the largest pay raise for junior enlisted troops in over four decades. Additionally, it ensures full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits, supports federal firefighters addressing wildfire crises, and increases investments in air traffic control.
To maintain essential programs without disruption, the resolution preserves Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It also allocates $7.6 billion for supplemental nutritional assistance programs targeting women, infants, and children.
Franklin remarked on the unity among House Republicans in preventing a government shutdown and emphasized their focus on advancing President Trump's America First priorities. He urged the Senate to pass the legislation promptly.
