Rep. Scott Franklin and Rep. Darren Soto have reintroduced a bipartisan resolution to establish March 15th as National Osceola Turkey Day. This initiative aims to recognize the unique wild turkey species native to Florida, highlighting its cultural, ecological, and recreational significance.
"The Osceola turkey is a special part of Florida’s natural heritage," stated Congressman Scott Franklin. He emphasized the need for conservation efforts to protect the habitat of these birds, with only 100,000 remaining. "This resolution underscores the importance of conservation programs that protect Florida’s wildlife and preserve hunting traditions for future generations."
Congressman Darren Soto remarked on the economic benefits brought by outdoor enthusiasts seeking the Osceola turkey in Central Florida. "I’m proud of our bipartisan efforts to protect the Osceola turkey and hunting traditions," he said.
Senator Rick Scott expressed pride in leading this annual resolution, noting that the Osceola turkey is a distinct element of Florida's natural heritage and a sustainable resource for enjoyment by both residents and tourists.
The Osceola turkey is one of five subspecies of wild turkey in North America, characterized by black wings with small white bands and dark brown-tipped tail feathers. Named after Chief Osceola, a notable Seminole leader from the 19th century, it thrives in various Floridian habitats such as cattle pastures, orange groves, oak hammocks, and swamplands.
Exclusively found in Florida, the Osceola turkey is highly sought after by hunters as part of the "Grand Slam" challenge—where hunters aim to harvest all four U.S. turkey subspecies. Florida's spring turkey season starts on March 15th each year.
Conservation efforts are bolstered through collaborations like the Wild Turkey Cost Share Program involving several organizations including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and others.
Originally introduced by Franklin in March 2023, this measure has support from Reps. Maria Salazar, Vern Buchanan, Gus Bilirakis, John Rutherford, Sen. Rick Scott, and Sen. Ashley Moody among others.
Supporting entities include: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Forest Service, Florida State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation, and the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
