Congressman Scott Franklin of Florida's 18th district expressed his support for the recently passed H.R. 4, known as the Recissions Act. The bill was approved in the House of Representatives with a narrow margin of 214-212 votes.
In his statement, Franklin highlighted former President Trump's commitment to addressing "waste, fraud and abuse in our federal government" through executive actions. He emphasized that Congress has a responsibility to solidify these efforts into law. "This rescission bill is a critical step in that process," he stated.
The legislation proposes cutting $9.4 billion from the national budget, including $8.3 billion in foreign aid and $1.1 billion from NPR and PBS. According to Franklin, these cuts target what he describes as "the kind of waste, fraud and politically driven spending that hardworking taxpayers should never be forced to fund."
Franklin acknowledged that while this amount will not eliminate the national debt, which stands at $36 trillion, it is part of a larger effort to manage federal spending more effectively. "Tackling our national debt will take sustained effort, consistent leadership and a willingness to root out the entrenched mismanagement and corruption that's been allowed to fester for far too long," he added.
He called on the Senate to pass the measure promptly as part of ongoing efforts by the House to control spending through reconciliation.
